Backbone Rock is known locally as the "Shortest Tunnel in the World". It is a hole about 20' deep blasted through a ridge by the Beaver Dam Railway Company around 1900 to make way for a railroad track. Today, the recreation area features a full campground, picnic area, an observation area on top of the ridge, and a trail around a waterfall nearby.
